Signs you may have Ear Wax Build-Up
Cerumen (more commonly known as Ear Wax) is a natural and important substance produced by the body to help clean and protect the ear canal. It plays a vital role in trapping dust, debris, micro-organisms and other irritants that could harm the delicate structures of the ears.

The amount of ear wax produced can vary from person to person. In some cases, excessive build-up may occur, leading to blockages that can affect hearing and require professional removal.

Common symptoms of wax impaction include:
- Muffled or reduced hearing
- Ear fullness or a feeling of blockage
- Itchiness or irritation
- Tinnitus or ringing in the ears
- Hearing aid whistling or blockage

What to expect at your appointment
Your hearing assessment is designed to be comfortable, comprehensive, and completely tailored to you.

1. Initial Ear Examination
We begin by taking a history of your recent ear health followed by an inspection of your ear canals using otoscopy.

2. Microsuction is used to remove Ear Wax
Microsuction involves the use of a gentle, medical-grade suction device, often combined with fine instruments, to safely remove earwax. One of the key advantages of this method is that the clinician can maintain a clear view of the ear canal throughout the procedure, allowing for precise and safe removal.

3. Immediate results
Most people notice an instant difference in hearing and comfort — it’s one of the most satisfying services we offer!

4. Post Care advice
Final video otoscopy examination is carried out followed by some guidance on ear health and how to avoid build-up in the future, especially if you use hearing aids.

No referral is necessary, you can book directly with our friendly team. If your hearing does not improve post wax removal, our experienced Audiologist can proceed with a comprehensive hearing assessment and/or examine middle ear mobility.

Frequently Asked Questions
Q Is microsuction safe?
Yes. Microsuction is generally regarded as the safest and most effective means of ear wax removal. It is also the preferred method if you have a previous eardrum perforation or have very narrow ear canals.

Q How often should I get my ears cleaned?
Everyone is different. Some people never need removal, while others may benefit from a clean every 6–12 months, especially if they wear hearing aids.

Q Why is microsuction the preferred method compared to other forms of wax removal?
Most GPs will cleaned a blocked ear using ear irrigation or syringing. This involves using a pressurised device to flush out the wax with water. This can sometimes lead to perforations, ear infections or dizziness. Microsuction is carried out under direct magnified visualisation. It is dry, safe and precise.

Q Should I use cotton buds to clean my ears?
No. Cotton buds often push wax deeper into the ear leading resulting in impaction and a more difficult removal.

Q How much does it cost for Ear wax removal?
We charge $100 for microsuction. Unfortunately, Medicare rebates are not available for Ear wax removal.
